Our Violin Teachers
Harry Nguyen
Having begun his musical journey on the violin at age 6, Harry is a classically trained violinist with more than 15 years of experience and is currently finishing his musical education at the Melbourne University Conservatory of Music, specializing in performance under the tutelage of the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra violinist Oksana Thompson and professional solo violist, Wenhong Luo.
Road to Mastering the Violin
In 2018 as concertmaster of the String Ensemble and Orchestra, Harry graduated St Michael's Grammar School with the Anne Jones Memorial Prize for Instrumental Music and is currently the recipient of multiple Corinna D'Hage String Scholarships at the University of Melbourne while being a member of the University Symphony Orchestra and multiple Chamber Quartets, playing both Violin and Viola.
Harry's Experience
Harry has performed orchestral, chamber, and solo work at major concert venues, including Hamer Hall, Melbourne Recital Centre, the NGV, Deakin Edge and Iwaki Auditorium. Experienced in a wide range of repertoire, from 18th-century baroque music, to the romance of Tchaikovsky in the 19th, and through to musical theatre of the present, Harry's experience in a vast range of musical styles in both solo and collaborative manners has cultivated his love and passion for music as a whole.
Teaching Style
Funnelling that passion for music, Harry's teaching aims to provide an outlet for musical expression supported by a stable technical foundation, facilitated by learning that is informative as it is engaging, making sure each and every student knows what they're practising and what goals they attain, whether it be technical dexterity, quality of sound, or musical expression.
Every student's goal is to develop technical competence, expression, and a love for music that they may express via their performance. Each student will learn at their own pace and love what they play, whether for fun or for AMEB exams.
Frances Reuben
Frances is currently completing a music industry diploma and has been teaching violin privately for over seven years. She achieved her AMusA diploma in 2017 and has completed all AMEB exams with excellent results.
Frances has experience teaching students of varying abilities and strives to create a positive learning environment where they feel supported and inspired to play. She believes that great results come from open and honest communication between students, teachers, and parents.
Vitus Lai Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, ATCL (piano)
Growing up learning both the piano and violin, Vitus is a classical piano and violin teacher at the studio. Before his studying at The University of Melbourne (Melbourne Conservatorium of Music), he obtained LTCL in violin and ATCL in piano in his teens.
His Experience and Teaching Approach
Vitus began to teach the violin starting in 2018. He has different levels of students from beginners to advance level players and he knows a great variety of repertoire from 16th-century music to 20th-century music. He believed the purpose of learning instruments isn’t just attending different examinations and competitions, learning different kinds of techniques, but learning the entire stories behind the music and knowing how to express yourself through music.
Vitus puts a heavy emphasis on the structure of his students’ learning progress, as well as the fundamentals. He believes that a musician can only go so far if their foundation is not properly built. To help his students lay a solid foundation, he often meticulously structures not only each lesson but each student’s learning progress according to their strengths and weaknesses. Immensely appreciating classical pieces, he is also very knowledgeable in the backgrounds of both solo and orchestral masterpieces.
Violin Lessons FAQ
Can I teach myself violin?
You may learn the violin like any other instrument. A method book, YouTube lessons, WikiHow and Stack Exchange articles, and more can be found online or in libraries.
How long will it take to learn the violin?
As with any other job, playing the violin professionally requires years of dedication and practice. Can you give me a ballpark estimate of how long it will take to learn the violin? To be honest, that decision rests squarely in your lap. You may accomplish much in the next three to five years if you stick to a regular and consistent training regimen.
What is the best age to learn violin?
5-7
Between the ages of 5 and 7, if your kid is motivated and can pay attention, that is when they should start learning to play the violin. But if your kid is a little younger or older, that shouldn't stop you. You can obtain a referral from a music store or a teacher.
Do violin strings expire?
Strings on violins do eventually wear out, unfortunately. So, it's probably not true that someone once found an old violin in a drawer and it played brilliantly the same second it was picked up. When it comes to keeping a violin in tip-top shape for playing, routine maintenance, such as string replacement, is essential.
