Our Cello Teachers
Brenny Dinh
Brenny first began his musical education, learning piano and cello at the age of 5. He was later awarded the Patrick Loftus Hills Music Scholarship at Xavier College, where he completed his AMusA Diploma on cello under the guidance of Rohan De Korte from the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Experience
Brenny has experience performing a wide repertoire on the cello, ranging from the Renaissance period to the Contemporary Music Period. He especially enjoys music from the Romantic Era and Contemporary Period, where he can express his musicality to match the piece's characteristics.
In addition to classical music, Brenny enjoys improvising mainstream music on the piano, where he was influenced by his piano teacher Tim Topham to learn new genres and hopes students will feel encouraged to expose themselves to different musical styles.
Musical Journey
Throughout his musical journey, Brenny has had the opportunity to tour and perform in the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in Vienna in 2016 as the principal cellist. Learning the cello has allowed Brenny to engage in various ensembles such as string quartet, symphony orchestras, string orchestras and musical theatres where he has performed in venues such as the MCG, Hammer Hall, Cathedrals and the Wiener Konzerthaus.
Teaching Style
Brenny's teaching style is focused on building a musical foundation with students and fostering effective practice habits by incorporating self-discipline. Ultimately, Brenny aims to ensure enjoyable lessons and hopes students can utilise their new skills through performances and ensembles to make the most out of their musical experience.
Angela McStephen Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the University of Melbourne
Angela McStephen has played both cello and trumpet since childhood, and learned to read music at the same time she learned to read words. She has taught music to students of all ages and abilities and began her teaching journey at the age of 17, when she taught cello to a friend and volunteered as a tutor for a music program for at-risk children. She enjoys almost all music, but especially loves baroque music and the big orchestral works of the Romantic era.
Her teaching style is flexible, depending heavily on how each student best learns, and she takes great care in tailoring lesson plans to each individual student. She loves to meet and build friendly relationships with her students and their families, and encourages the parents of her younger students to be involved in lessons and at-home practice.
Angela can teach from any curriculum, but prefers the Abracadabra and Suzuki books, and the AMEB syllabus. Her emphasis is on developing a good technique early in order to maintain comfort while playing.
She is very keen to work with students of all ages and abilities, and has had success with overcoming accessibility challenges to bring the joy of playing music to as many people as possible.
Angela graduated with a Bachelor of Music (Honours) from the University of Melbourne in 2019.
Cello Lessons FAQ
Can I teach myself to play the cello?
A lot of time and effort is needed if you want to learn to play the cello on your own. The secret to success when teaching yourself this instrument is a combination of watching videos of lessons and musicians, learning sheet music, and putting in the time.
Is the cello easier than the violin?
What's simpler: the violin or the cello? The cello's wider repertoire and more comfortable holding position may make it slightly less daunting to start playing. Yet, frets or no frets, these instruments have several difficulties in playing and sound production.
What is the best age to learn cello?
Within that age range, from 6 to 7 years old.
However, there must be thought given to a minimum age at which cello instruction should begin. Professionals recommend starting cello lessons between the ages of 6 and 7. The younger the child, the more difficult it is for them to concentrate and retain their energy.
Why is the cello so special?
In reality, it is one of the few instruments that can play music written in any clef (bass, tenor, or treble), making it one of the most flexible in the orchestra.
